Men and Acne
- 10-15% of males have acne. This is due to the high amount of androgens (male hormones such as testosterone) prevalent in males.
- Chest and back acne is more prevalent in males.
- Men are generally less likely to seek treatment.
- Males tend to make their acne worse when shaving over their spots - see our guide to shaving below.
Shaving with Spots

If you suffer from spots, you may think that shaving is the worst thing you could do to your face, but it's actually quite a good way of exfoliating your face and may help prevent the formation of spots and blackheads on your face - just don't shave over raised spots, as this may lead to significant scarring.
Here's Our Shaving Guide:
- You can remove dirt and alleviate oily skin by beginning your shave with Aknicare® Remover or Cleanser. Washing your face with warm water helps soften the face.
- Rinse your face with warm water and apply a shave foam or gel, while your
skin is still wet. This will help to soften the hairs, so you don't need to press so hard. - Always use a really sharp blade, so that you don't have to push the blade into your skin.
- Shave with smooth strokes (heavy pressure can damage the inflamed skin) in the same direction as your hair grows. Rinse the blade after each stroke.
- Leave the tricky areas around your mouth and chin until last. This is to give the hair there longer to soften.
- Take care when shaving around raised spots and over blackheads.
- Rinse your face with warm water then splash with cold water to help close your pores. This helps to prevent more oil and debris getting into hair follicles, the early stage of spot formation.
- Finally, apply Aknicare® Cream as a moisturiser
