The Eyes Have It
Due to photo (sun damage) and chrono (time) ageing and through constant use of muscles in expressing surprise, in concentration, frowning and smiling (dynamic) the orbital area becomes stressed and changes shape over time with the eyelids drooping and wrinkles, fine lines and 'crows feet' becoming more pronounced, typifying an older appearance.
This is why it is so important to pay attention to this area in order to maintain a fresher smoother younger look. The ENERPEEL® EL system reduces these photo and age related changes leading to improvements in lines, wrinkles and crows feet, helping create a smoother fuller expressive eye shape with less eyelid droop.
Through chrono and photo ageing the area around the eyes may also develop hyper-pigmented lesions and dark circles under the eyes, contributing to a tired run down look. ENERPEEL® EL can also be used to lighten and brighten the under eye area resulting in a healthier younger look.
Consequently ENERPEEL® EL can address all the visible characteristics used to describe 'old eyes'.
Watch Your Mouth
As a result of photo (sun damage) and chrono (time) ageing and through constant use of muscles in talking, smiling over time (dynamic) the lips and vermilion become stressed and the shape changes over time with the lips becoming thinner, flatter and wider, typifying an older appearance.
This is why it is so important to pay attention to this area in order to maintain a fuller rounder younger lip shape. The ENERPEEL® EL system resists these changes leading to improvements in the shape of the cupids bow, a tighter fuller lip shape with an increased definition to the vermilion - improving the 3 dimensional shape.
Through chrono and photo ageing and overexposure to the sun the area around the mouth may also develop a degree of hyperpigmentation contributing to an older looking mouth. ENERPEEL® EL can also be used to lighten a 'Melanin Moustache'.
Consequently ENERPEEL® EL can address all the visible characteristics used to describe 'an old mouth'.
Definitions
The ENERPEEL® EL system is a single-use Medical Device consisting of a controlled viscosity mono-phase gel incorporating a mixture of acids within an appropriate applicator recommended for chemical peeling and remodelling of the Peri-ocular (eyelids included) and labial regions (vermillion not included).
These areas are the biggest give-aways in our visual age. Very few procedures can target this area effectively and safely. This is because of the delicate nature of these areas. Eyelid skin is the thinnest with the epidermis measuring only 0.004 mm thick. Periorbital wrinkles (crow's feet) are primarily due to cumulative time and UV related effects in conjunction with continual contraction of the orbicularis muscle.
The combination of acids used in ENERPEEL® EL is a qualitative blend of:
- LACTIC ACID
- TRICHLOROACETIC ACID
The use of a combination of TCA and LA is supported historically by the use and well known synergistic effect of pre-treating skin with AHA or Jessner's solution before applying TCA.
The combination of these two acids allows one to achieve as effective results as with a higher TCA strength but using a lower strength TCA, thus limiting and controlling any injury to the skin.
It has also been demonstrated that Lactic Acid can modulate melanin biosynthesis independently. This is useful not only in treatment, but also in reducing the risk of post-inflammatory hyper pigmentation that can occur after a chemical peel.
The Application Process
The peeling ingredients are supplied in a monophasic gel delivered by a pen applicator which dispenses the correct amount of gel to the area selected to allow a controlled delivery of the active ingredients.
In order to manage the peeling process effectively we build up the concentration of acid molecules on the skin using a layering technique which allows one to achieve an effective peeling concentration while minimising and controlling the risk of complications such as erythema and frosting.
Successive gel layers are applied to the skin units selected, one layer on top of the other allowing time for the acid molecules in each application to diffuse out of the gel and into the skin. The minimum and maximum times recommended are shown below. The timings and number of layers per client should be predetermined after assessment of skin type, age and ethinicity. The applicator allows for a uniform layer of gel to be applied.
Each layer provides 3.75% TRICHLOROACETIC ACID and 15% LACTIC ACID.
Peeling commences from application of the first layer, allowing the clinician to gauge individual skin response.
The aim is to build up to the effective peeling concentration using 4 successive layers to achieve:
- 15% TCA
- 60% LACTIC ACID (pH= ~ 0.64)
Each ENERPEEL® EL device provides sufficient gel for 4 layers for all the zones. This is important because it allows the clinician to achieve the desired quantity of acid in a multiphase and controlled way.
After applying 4 layers of gel it is possible to reach the same number of molecules of acid as if one layer at 60% lactic acid and 15% trichloroacetic acid had been applied.

During treatment, the client can become aware of a prickling sensation which rises in intensity after about 1 minute after the application of the 2nd or 3rd layer. This reaches a maximum intensity which is almost always acceptable and tolerable to the client. This usually remains constant until neutralisation.
Erythema can occur although this is usually mild in intensity
Level 1 'Frosting' is possible during the procedure. If seen it may begin between the 2nd and 4th layer and is only usually an issue during the first session. Some clinicians at their discretion will extend the application times to achieve frosting. ENERPEEL® EL is designed to be applied in a layered format where there are four separate sessions which allows one to achieve results without excessive frosting where the client can continue with their daily routine and not have to hide away while the skin recovers from excessive peeling and healing. Therefore the ENERPEEL® EL recommendation is 'should frosting occur, neutralise immediately to maintain peeling at the superficial level'.

The Science Behind the Peel
The patented carrier mechanism ensures the peeling solution diffuses uniquely through both the lipophilic (fat component) and hydrophilic (water component) structures of skin cells. (Other peels diffuse through hydrophilic only). This ensures a more even peel whereby the lipid component is removed along with the water-soluble component of the cell rather than left as a potential irritant, which may also slow down recovery. The net result is a highly effective, clinically evaluated peel where any redness and erythema is less in severity and duration.
ENERPEEL® EL supplies TCA and Lactic Acid evenly to the skin surface through a specially designed gel applicator to allow even distribution quickly.
The ENERPEEL® EL kit provides all the equipment for carrying out the 4 peeling sessions while also providing the pre treatment of TERPROLINE® to improve the skins intercellular matrix prior to peeling and to supply all the raw materials and fibroblast stimulators to maximise rejuvenation and minimise post procedural discomfort and peeling.
Also FILLAST® EL is provided in the kit which supplements the epidermal layer diectly with hyaluronic acid while also stimulating increased bio-synthesis of hyaluronic acid by your fibroblasts. It also inhibits the destruction of existing hyaluronic acid to boost the levels in three ways.
High hyaluronic acid levels have a direct bearing on the type of collagen you develop so the higher the better to maximise collagen type III levels.
SUNWARDS® SA is also provided which is a special sunscreen with anti erythema properties.
